Voice Masculinisation

Voice masculinisation training is also suitable for males that are experiencing Puberphonia, or just not satifsfied with their pitch.

For FTM (female-to-male) voice training may involves a combination of testosterone therapy and transgender voice training, but both can also be used independently. Below, we answer the most common questions people have about voice masculinisation.

How Low Will My Voice Go on Testosterone?

Testosterone, often called “T,” leads to structural changes in the vocal folds, typically causing them to thicken and lengthen. This usually results in a lower speaking pitch. Most trans masculine individuals experience a noticeable drop in pitch within 6–12 months of starting testosterone, often moving from the typical female to the typical male range.

It is important to note that individual results vary. Genetics, anatomy, age, and hormone dosage all influence how much your voice will deepen. While pitch may drop significantly other aspects such as resonance, vocal instability and fatigue are often improved with voice training to fully achieve a masculine-sounding voice (Nygren et al. 2016)

Can I Masculinise My Voice Without Testosterone?

Yes. Not everyone can or wants to take testosterone. Those those who do not take hormones can still achieve a masculine or androgynous voice through transgender voice Masculinisation by a trained speech therapist. Exercises focus on:

  • Lowering habitual speaking pitch safely (without developing muscle tension dysphonia)

  • Developing chest-focused resonance

  • Modifying intonation and speech patterns

  • Increasing vocal stamina

Do I Need Voice Therapy if I’m Already on Testosterone?

While testosterone lowers pitch, it does not automatically adjust all elements of a masculine-sounding voice. With 25% of transgender men not being percieved as male after testosterone, by combining testosterone with voice training produces the best results in terms of vocal confidence and perception by others (Söderpalm E et al. 2004).

Will Testosterone Affect My Singing Voice?

Many transgender male singers adapt successfully with proper technique. However, some people may experience hoarseness, tension and discomfort. Professional guidance from our singing coach, Nathan can help preserve range, tone, and vocal health throughout hormone therapy.

How Long Does It Take to Develop a Stable Masculine Voice?

Voice changes from testosterone typically begin within a few months and continue to evolve over 12–24 months. The exact timeline varies depending on anatomy, hormone levels, and age.

Voice therapy can accelerate progress by teaching safe techniques to lower pitch, strengthen resonance, and adapt speech patterns. With regular practice, many clients feel confident using their new voice in everyday life within several months of starting therapy.

How many sessions does voice masculinisation take?

An assessment (one hour), then 6-9 therapy sessions (45 minutes).

Do you have a waiting list?

No - an appointment is typically available within a week of the consultation.
