What is Dysphagia?

Dysphagia is the medical term for swallowing difficulties. These difficulties might be coughing when you are eating and drinking. You may have difficulty chewing or have a sensation of food sticking in your throat. 

What causes difficulty swallowing?

There are a range of causes for difficulty swallowing including:

  • Stroke

  • Neurological conditions involving the brain 

  • Head and Neck Cancer

  • Dementia

  • Respiratory conditions

How does difficulty with swallowing affect people?

It can cause chest infections with food or drink entering the airway. It can result in malnutrition, dehydration and weight loss.

How can a Speech and Language Therapist help with difficulties swallowing? 

  • Diagnosis of Dysphagia

  • Improve swallow using exercises or strategies

  • Modifying food or drinks to reduce chest infections

  • Educate family members in Dysphagia
