EXPERT ONLINE ADULT SPEECH THERAPY FOR LISPS

Our Clinical Specialist has a specialist interest in Lisps and regularly works with clients presenting with a Lisp in her clinical practice.

Lisping is very common within adults, with varying levels of severity. Some adults who lisp are very self-conscious about it and it affects their self-esteem and confidence to speak, and impacts on their day to day life. They may place themselves under a great deal of pressure to avoid words involving /s/ and /z/ and may even avoid talking because of it. Many adults are keen to correct their speech in order to feel more confident when speaking both socially and in the workplace.

‘I have had 3 sessions with Alison and the progress with my speech is amazing. I am 44 years old, and the intention of the sessions was to work towards eliminating my lisp. Alison has helped me to develop the way that I say my "S" and "Z" sounds to that the tongue is in the correct place. With continued practice I feel that I can achieve the goal of eliminating the lisp, this is a life changing achievement for me’ - Andy

WHAT IS A LISP?

A lisp affects the /s/ sound or the /z/ sound in speech.

WHAT CAUSES A LISP?

Typically, the tongue is in an incorrect position, producing a distorted sound. It is typically from childhood. It may be also due to an anterior or posterior tongue tie. In Adults it can sometimes be caused by new dental work such as veneers. This may resolve over a period of weeks, but if not, you may wish to have Speech Therapy for your Speech.

What are the types of lisp?

There are four types of lisps:

  • An Interdental Lisp or a Frontal Lisp – this type of lisp occurs when the tongue is forward and between the top and bottom teeth – the /s/ sounds like a /th/.

  • A Dental Lisp –is similar to the interdental lisp – the tongue is again too far forward but pushes against the back of the top teeth rather protruding between the top and bottom teeth.

  • A Lateral lisp – this type of lisp occurs when the sides of the tongue are flat rather than raised and this allows air to flow freely into the cheeks rather than out of the mouth – this may produce a wet-sounding or slushy /s/.

  • A Palatal Lisp – the tongue tip is too far back – rather than being behind the top teeth it is further back on the roof of the mouth.

HOW TO CORRECT A LISP IN ADULTS?

Every adult is different, and the process of therapy varies from person to person. Whilst some clients only attend a couple of sessions with an experienced Speech Therapist to learn about how to make the /s/ and /z/ sounds, others attend more sessions in order to generalize their /s/ and /z/ into their everyday speech. The initial session will inform us whether the lisp is due to your anatomy and in some instances, we may need to signpost you to other services for further investigation.

Am I too old to change my speech?

No! We are often asked this question. Adults we treat have struggled with low self-confidence and embarrassment of their lisp. They are surprised when they successfully change their speech, and gain confidence at work and socially.
